Overview / Sleep · Nights 4, 5

Grand Canyon Village

idea

Two nights inside the park, on or near the South Rim.

Sleeping in the park means walking to the rim for sunrise and sunset, and no queue at the entrance gate on day 5. Lodging inside the park opens ~13 months ahead and fills fast — this is the booking to make first.

Options in the village

El Tovar Hotel

The 1905 hotel right on the rim, the grandest and most expensive. Its dining room is worth a dinner even when sleeping elsewhere.

Bright Angel Lodge

Mary Colter’s rustic lodge on the rim, with simple rooms and cabins; some share bathrooms. The best value for a rim location.

Maswik Lodge

Newer, plainer rooms a few minutes’ walk back from the rim. Easier to get.

Fallback

Tusayan, just outside the south entrance (~10 min drive to the village), has ordinary chain hotels. Fine, but every trip in goes through the gate.

Notes

  • Two nights in the same room — no packing up on day 5.
  • Elevation ~2,100 m; nights are cold in September.
