Overview / Day 5

Cameron Trading Post

idea

Historic 1916 trading post — Navajo & Hopi crafts, Navajo tacos, rooms by the Little Colorado.

Sits on US‑89 at the turn-off to the Grand Canyon’s east entrance, so it fits the route between Monument Valley and the canyon with no detour. Founded in 1916 next to the old suspension bridge over the Little Colorado.

What’s there

  • Trading post / shop — large store with Navajo rugs, Hopi kachinas, jewelry, pottery, plus regular souvenirs. The separate gallery has the old, expensive pieces; worth looking even if not buying.
  • Dining room — pressed-tin ceiling. Order the Navajo taco (fry bread with chili and toppings) — enough for two.
  • Gardens behind the motel, view of the old bridge.

Buying tips

  • Ask whether a piece is handmade and by whom; reputable shops will say.
  • Silver + turquoise is the classic; small items (earrings, a bracelet) are affordable.
  • Keep the receipt — customs on return to Germany if over the duty-free limit.

Nearby

  • Little Colorado River Gorge — roadside overlook on AZ‑64 toward Desert View, roadside stalls selling crafts directly from makers.
  • Alternative if the route changes: Hubbell Trading Post (Ganado, AZ), the oldest operating trading post on the Navajo Nation, run by the NPS.
