Cunningham Cabin
Small log homestead on the valley floor, a short pull-off from US‑26/89/191 between Moose and Moran. Pierce and Margaret Cunningham homesteaded here in the late 1880s; the cabin is a “dog-trot” layout (two rooms joined by a covered breezeway) with a sod roof. Easy flat walk, ~15 minutes. Late afternoon light on the peaks behind it is the shot.
Other stops
- Mormon Row — the Moulton barns with the Teton range behind. Go at sunrise; it’s crowded by 8 a.m.
- Schwabacher Landing — beaver ponds with mountain reflections. Morning, calm water.
- Snake River Overlook — the Ansel Adams viewpoint.
- Oxbow Bend — best chance for moose, elk, otters, pelicans. Dusk.
- Jenny Lake — take the boat across, walk up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point (~3 km round trip from the dock, steep in parts).
- Menor’s Ferry + Chapel of the Transfiguration — short historic loop near Moose, the chapel window frames the Grand Teton.
Practical
- Bear spray: buy in Jackson (can’t fly with it), carry it on trails.
- Mid-September: aspens just starting to turn, elk rut — bugling at dawn/dusk. Mornings can be near freezing.
- Gas up in Jackson; few stations inside the park.
- Optional: Teton Village aerial tram if the weather is clear.
